“Sometimes Music is all you need to make you feel better”

Let's try to figure out what this quote means. Have you ever wondered why music is frequently employed in therapy? Music is like a switch that activates a wonderful feeling! but how does it do it?

Music is a key function of our brain and listening to music makes us feel joyful, relaxed, refreshed, and delighted, as well as reducing tension and calming us down.

Music causes Dopamine, popularly known as the "feel-good hormone or Reward-hormone," to be released in various parts of our brain. When researchers used a combination of PET and FMRI to examine the brains of people while they listened to music, they discovered that dopamine was released in the striatum during the peak times of emotional arousal.

Dopamine belongs to the catecholamine and phenethylamine families of organic chemicals (neurotransmitters). Dopamine is released when a person engages in enjoyable conduct, and the action is marked as deserving of a reward. This encourages the person to repeat the action.

Dopamine boosts motivation, anticipation of pleasure, attention and focus. It aids memory and learning, boosts feelings of love, bone strength and creativity and also affects sleep cycles. When sound waves enter your ear canals, they are transmitted to the inner ear. They are then converted into tiny electric currents and delivered to your brain. The rhythm, pitch, timbre, and emotion of a musical sound are decoded by different areas of the brain. This stimulates the Striatum or Nucleus of the forebrain which in turn triggers the release of dopamine. And the above-mentioned events take place. Parkinson's disease is characterized by stiff movements caused by a lack of dopamine. Although serotonin shortage is more commonly associated to depression, research show that a dopamine deficiency can also contribute to a bad mood. People with depression, in particular, frequently lack motivational drive and concentration. Because tyrosine is used to make dopamine, consuming more of this amino acid through diet may help to increase dopamine levels in the brain. A diet high in tyrosine has been shown to increase memory and mental performance. Tyrosine-rich foods include sesame seeds, beef, soyabean, and cheese. At the end of this article, what have we learned?
